High streets shrink as local shop closures increase
The number of shops on our high streets is now falling faster than ever after reaching an all-time peak in 2018. According to analysts from the Local Data Company, the number of shops in Britain’s 650 biggest town centres reached its height in the first three months of 2018, when there were 192,765 retail units.
Since then there has been a slow decline which drastically dropped in 2020 due to the ongoing global pandemic. An estimated 20,000 stores will be lost by the end of the year, according to figures from the Centre for Retail Research, a massive jump on the 4,547 that closed in 2019.
The research suggests the effect of the pandemic on Britain’s town and city centres will hit the industry for the rest of the year.
